The Robus Boys Get Together

Last Saturday, the Robus boys and their wives got together with their mom to celebrate Christmas. We enjoyed a good lunch at Mack's, and visiting during the afternoon. Greg made a slide show, "Let It Snow," to share old photos of the family in the snow through the years, and we enjoyed looking at it on Elaine's computer -- fun memories!

More Halloween Pictures

I know, I know... it's time for Christmas... but I just got my new computer configured so I could edit these photos. Here are the rest of our little Halloween friends, and a couple of pictures of Greg's niece and nephew from Missouri.

This is my friend Ruth and her son, James Ketchum. He was Spider Man!

Next is Grant Childers and his friend.

Hogan Privitt was an Incredibles (he says Increbidles!) Isn't he adorable?!

Then we have the Olmsteads... Waren Thomas and Sarah Grace, and McKensey Lathrop, who was the Little Mermaid. And there's Jack Gardner... his knight costume made a great combo with Ladd's jester suit! All of the kids were so cute, and they were having a great time.

The other pictures are of Caitlyn and Chase, Greg's niece and nephew from Missouri. Caitlyn LOVES Annie, so this was a great choice for her. Chase is a fireman!

Happy Halloween!

Here are some Halloween pictures of my cousin Olivia and my little friend Ladd Choate. I taught his daddy in first grade nearly 30 years ago... yikes!

This is my friends Cale Anderson and Kerry Singleton, and their dad, Boyd. Cale was a lion and Kerry was a unicorn. Then we have a picture of 2 go-go girls, a.k.a. Erin and Mecayla, our nieces.

I have lots more cute Halloween pics, but my computer is acting up, so I will have to post them later. Enjoy!

Early Decades and Getting Older

Yes, I'm getting older!*LOL* Recently, we attended the Early Decades banquet, honoring alumni of Heber Springs High School who graduated 30 years ago or longer. This was my 2nd year to attend. The event was held in the Family Life Center of our church, and about 250 people attended. I saw a cousin near the entrance door to the FLC, and she said, "You're not old enough to be here!" I assured her that yes, sadly, I was! *LOL*

Greg went with me, as well as my friend and childhood neighbor, Marla Ann. We also took Olive Baldridge with us. Olive was in the class of 1931!!! My mother's class was the host class, having graduated in 1956 -- 50 years ago! They presented a wonderful program on the Missouri & North Arkansas (M & NA) Railroad, which used to pass through Cleburne County and Heber Springs. It was really interesting. At one point, the narrator, Sammye Lou Johnston Chapin mentioned that a crowd turned out on the courthouse square in 1917 to celebrate Armistice Day. Olive leaned over and said, "I remember... I was there!" She would have been 6 or 7 then. Isn't she pretty?!

Wooo Pig, Sooie... Razorkitty!!!

This is our cat Lucy... as you can see, she likes to sleep on her back. She got on the big Razorback duffle roll pillow in Greg's office, and man, did she put on a show! It sorta looks like she is calling the Hogs in one of these, doesn't it?!!!

9-11 2001... Remembering

On this five year anniversary of September 11, 2001, I am thinking of all of those who perished, but especially two men from Ladder Company 21 in Hell's Kitchen, New York. Firefighters Joe Henry and Keith Glascoe both died trying to save others that day. Joe was only 25 and left behind a family of firefighters, including his father, Edward Sr., and his brothers Eddie and Michael. His uncles and grandfather were also firefighters. His mother, Alice, corresponds with me several times a year, and I have been so blessed by her strength. Joe was single with his whole life ahead of him, and he was loved by a host of family and friends.

Keith Glascoe was the proud father of 2... Nolan, and Owen. In the first picture I received, you can see the date says 8-17-2001, just about 1 month before his death, and they were apparently celebrating Owen's first birthday. I have had the privilege of corresponding through the years with Keiths' widow, Veronica, who gave birth to their 3rd son, in the spring of 2002, and named him Keith for his father. As you can see, the boys are healthy and doing well, and it always thrills me to see their bright smiles. I have learned a lot on the internet postings about their dad, and I am sure he would be so proud of all of them.

You can learn more about Joe Henry and Keith Glascoe by doing a Google search for their names. We must NEVER forget their sacrifice, nor their families. May God's peace and comfort cover the Glascoes and Henrys... and ALL of the families who suffered loss on this day... in this moment, and forever.

Sink Full of Cats

This morning, Greg went into the bathroom to brush his teeth, and this is what he found...

Mabel is IN the sink, and Lucy is to the right. Who do you think rules the roost at this house?!

Happy 16th to Jasmine!!!

Today is the 16th birthday of my niece, Jasmine! Here are pictures of her the day she was born - August 28, 1990... and 5 days later. For probably the first six weeks of her life, I went to see her nearly every day at least once! Today, she drove herself to see US! Doesn't seem possible... she is really growing up fast! Happy Birthday, Sweetie... we are very proud of you and who you are becoming!

32 and Counting!

August 16 was our 32nd wedding anniversary. It was the first anniversary since 1977 that one of us, at least, wasn't working... first Greg with the Corps of Engineers, and then both of us at Workamper News. Our anniversary always fell one day after magazine deadline day, so we were up to our ears in production!

To celebrate the anniversary and our new-found freedom, we went to Mtn. View! We figured it was probably one of the cooler spots in Arkansas on August 16, and was it ever! A mild "cold front" pushed through the state a day prior, and temps that had soared to 109 the previous week only got to upper 80's on the 16th. We started our day with a breakfast at Joshua's, a popular Mtn. View diner, then headed for Blanchard Caverns, some 15 miles north of Mtn. View.

We discovered that the cave tour we wanted to take was a couple of ours away, so we toured the visitor center, visited the springs below, and drove around Sylamore Campground nearby. The water that springs from Blanchard Caverns is very cold, and the path to the opening where the spring emerges is shaded to the point of being almost dark... you truly are deep in forest. It is cool, serene, and very inviting on a hot summer day! Greg is sitting on a rock out in the creek just below the spring.

Then... and now... here we are in 1974, and 2006!

Here we are leaving the church after our wedding in 1974... and sitting near the spring at Blanchard Caverns in 2006!!!

This is the bride on the bluffs near the Robus family home in 1974 (and about a block from where we now reside), and at the Springs in 2006!

The cave tour was amazing... having taken the first-level Dripstone tour several times, we opted for the 2nd-level Discovery tour. It doesn't have quite as many stalactites and stalagmites as the first level, because it is farther into the cave and younger, but what is there is truly awesome. And... we got to see evidence of early cavers... many from the 1960's and 70's, who helped to discover this section and the 3rd level, which is a "crawl-on-your belly" tour by reservation only, and not for me!! We also saw the only natural opening to the cave (other than the spring entrance, which is not navigable) -- a 70 foot drop that is slick and treacherous, but for early cavers the only way in and out! I had seen it from the outside as a child, but certainly not from the inside!

We polished off our 2-hour cave tour with some relaxing time in Sylamore creek, wading in the cool water and relaxing on the rocky beach, made up of limestone and sandstone deposits, mostly.
I love to sit and look for fossils... and I am never disappointed. After our creek visit and a brief stop at a natural cave in the campground's group camping area, we went downtown to the soda fountain (still in a drugstore, just like when we were kids), and then toured some antique malls/flea markets before heading home.

Time to Bore You With New Pictures!

Our nephew John's wife sent photos today from the 80th birthday party for Greg's mother, Elaine Robus, held July 2. I thought I'd share a few good ones here...

This is us with Jasmine and Greg's mother, Elaine... the "birthday girl!"

The next picture is Caitlyn -- our great-niece.

Here's our little "Chaser" - actually, it's Chase! He's all boy!

This is Olivia, my cousin... she was a guest at the party...
